We’re all a bit bemused by this; some people here at Combermere Abbey can
see something a bit strange in the middle of this photograph but others can’t.
It was taken in a ground floor hallway in the gothick mansion on a long time
exposure just recently, while everyone was outside at the Flower Power event.
Photographer Paul Worpole set up his camera on a tripod and left it on an
exposure of a couple of minutes. He took dozens of pictures all over the house
while it was so quiet, and it was only when he sent the shots through to the
estate office yesterday that sharp-eyed Heather noticed something strange in
this one. Can it be a Combermere ghost?
The Abbey is well-known for its
hauntings, and several paranormal groups have investigated strange goings-on in
the house over the years. One all-night ghost hunt was on television a few
The Abbey was also the site of one of the most famous ghost photos.
In 1891 an amateur photographer, Sybell Corbet took a one hour-long exposure in
the library while the funeral of the first Lord Combermere was taking place
four miles away. All the servants were at the funeral, as you would expect, and
Sybell was definitely alone in the house – yet when the image was developed it clearly
showed an elderly, bearded gentleman sitting in a chair; an elderly gentleman
who looked very like the late Lord himself, seated in what had been Lord
Combermere’s favourite chair.
Has Paul now captured another supernatural image?
